Premier Women take top spot after undefeated start to EDFL season

Tuesday 03 May 2022

Wayne Spicer provides his first thoughts on our undefeated start to the season after beating Burnside Heights over the weekend in the Airport Toyota Women's Premier Division. -

Our Premier Division women headed to Burnside Heights over the weekend. - Burnside Heights play their home ground very well so regardless of their position on the ladder, it’s always regarded as a bit of a dangerous game. It turned out to be a great result for our women in what were very trying conditions with a strong wind favouring one end.

We started the first quarter slowly but with Burnside’s inability to score a major and hard work from our midfield and backline, we were able to take a 9 point lead into the first break after kicking into the wind. The second quarter saw us start to dominate and play our own exciting brand of football. We made good use of the wind and went into the halftime break 21 points in front.

To Burnside’s credit they didn’t give up and started the third quarter extremely well, they took their opportunities with the wind to score a couple of majors and were starting to apply major pressure to our girls. - To our girls credit we fought back strongly towards the end of the quarter to kick a couple of goals and maintain our halftime lead of 21 points.

The last quarter saw us totally get on top of Burnside in all departments. Amazingly we kicked 10  straight points, although I would have obviously preferred goals. On top of this  we didn’t let Burnside score! It was fantastic to see the women run the game right out.

The win saw us jump to the top of the ladder, undefeated after the first four rounds. A fantastic achievement by all involved, still with a lot of hard work to do. Next week we take on 5th place Maribyrnong Park at home in what will be another tough game. As Grant Smith had mentioned earlier we have now become the hunted and have to be on top of our game week in week out.

We had great contributors all over the ground, our midfield led by our co captains Gem Wright and Jacinta Scott backed up by Courtney Bligh, Ruby Smith and Yasmine Guzel.

Solid performances down back from Ava Gerada, Mikayla Plant, Kayla Glazebrook and our forwards lead by Danielle Linton, Brooke Byron and Taylah Manson all kicking 2 goals each. A great all round performance from alI, I could have mentioned any of the 22 players as they all made a contribution.

A special mention to Grant Smith. - I appreciate everything our volunteers do for our women on a weekly basis but wanted to single one person out on a fantastic effort.

Our president Grant Smith took it upon himself to strap all of our women on the weekend, unfortunately we were left without someone with the knowledge so Grant provided the support for the women. He also ran water for the entire game.

Three weeks ago he umpired the Under 18.5 girls who played prior to our game then ran water for our entire game. No job too big or small for this guy , thanks Grant it's much appreciated the effort you put in. - Volunteers are the real heroes of football clubs.
