OUR STORY
FROM HUMBLE BEGINNINGS TO A PROUD COMMUNITY FOOTBALL CLUB
Westmeadows Football Club was founded in 1970 by a small group of local community members who shared a vision to give children in the Westmeadows area the opportunity to play Australian Rules Football. The club began with just one Under 11 team and steadily grew as more families became part of the Westmeadows story.
In 1977, the club reached a major milestone with the introduction of its first open age team competing in the Essendon District Football League. The club was built on the dedication and vision of founding members Neville O'Brien, Gillian O'Brien, Herbie Franksen, Jim Doran and Henry Brockmuller, whose commitment helped establish the foundations of what would become a proud and lasting community football club.

More than five decades later, Westmeadows Football Club continues to thrive. The club now supports players across Auskick, Under 8's, junior boys and girls football, as well as senior men's and senior women's programs, with more than 200 local families now part of the club community. Based at Willowbrook Reserve, the club has become a central part of the local area. It is a place where players, families and volunteers come together through a shared love of the game, with generations proudly wearing the yellow and black.
Built on strong community values, Westmeadows Football Club continues to focus on participation, respect and belonging, providing opportunities for players of all ages and abilities to develop their skills, build lifelong friendships and be part of a club that has represented the local community for more than fifty years.

ELITE PATHWAYS
A PATHWAY FROM WESTMEADOWS TO ELITE FOOTBALL
Over the years, Westmeadows Football Club has developed a proud reputation for nurturing talent, with a number of players progressing to the highest levels of Australian Football. The club has produced several VFL and AFL footballers, including Kevin McGuire, Andrew Krakouer, Corey McKernan, Anthony Dwyer, Anthony McGregor, Scott Wynd, Craig Ellis, Jordan Bannister and Andrew Welsh.
Among these, the most notable is 2011 Brownlow Medallist Dane Swan, who began his football journey as a junior at Westmeadows. His rise from grassroots football to the AFL highlights the important role community clubs play in developing young players.
Swan’s career is a powerful reminder of what can be achieved through dedication, opportunity and strong local football foundations, and continues to inspire the next generation of players coming through Westmeadows.
