Our Senior Women’s program travelled to Wyndham Vale Football Club over the weekend for their first hit-out of the year. Senior Women’s Coach Gemma Wright shared her thoughts following the group’s opening practice match.

A good first hit-out to start the year, with plenty to work on as we build into the season.

The first half was a strong showing, with our pressure and fitness really standing out. The group worked hard around the ground and showed some promising signs early. We also saw some positive signs with a few small tweaks to our game plan, which started to come through at different stages across the day.

As the game went on, we dropped away in areas, particularly around the contest. It’s an area we know we need to improve, and something we’ll look to rectify over the next few weeks at training.

As a coaching group, we’re really pleased with where the program is at. The standards the players are setting have been strong, and it’s been reinforced by the support we’re seeing from the community and people around the club.

Overall, a valuable hit-out to see where we’re at. Plenty of positives to take away and a clear focus on what we need to sharpen up moving forward.

standout players

Sarah Wright would have led all players in disposals on the ground, with her ability to read the ball a real standout. The group will benefit from her experience moving forward.

Ella Guest, one of our new recruits, applied great pressure in the forward half and was rewarded on the scoreboard.

Mackenzie Best held down a key defensive role and showed strong composure. Her willingness to learn and develop continues to stand out.

Liana Keenan was given a role outside her comfort zone and approached it with the right intent. We were really pleased with the way she went about it.

new recruits

We’re really pleased with how our new recruits are settling into the program and the impact they’re already having, both on and off the field.

Sarah Wright has come in and made an immediate impact, driving the standards of our program, particularly on the fitness side. Her experience and professionalism have set a strong example for the girls.

Ella Guest has great footy smarts and has fit in seamlessly within the different personalities within our women's group. She’s shown a strong understanding of the game and an ability to connect quickly with those around her.

We also welcome Jameson and Mackenzie Best back, who have both picked up where they left off. Their continued improvement each week has been really pleasing, and they’re showing great commitment to their development and the direction of the program.

Our Senior Women’s program has one more hit-out before the season kicks off, facing Power House Football Club at our 2026 Season Launch this Saturday.
