A meaningful hit-out for our Senior Men over the weekend as they took on Epping Football Club in their second practice match of the year, playing for the inaugural Trenty “Blue Eyes” Theodore Cup.
Senior Assistant Markus Welsh shared his thoughts on the performance, highlighting a number of strong individual efforts, while Coach Chris Johnston spoke on the return of our Under 18.5 program following their first hit-out of 2026.
return of our under 18.5 men
A huge positive for the club was the return of our Under 18.5 Men after a couple of years without fielding a side, now led by Head Coach Chris Johnston. The group has hit the ground running with a list of 28 players, featuring a strong mix of new and returning talent, with outstanding energy around the program.
Epping brought strong pressure early and it was a tough contest in the first half, but as the game wore on, our fitness and skill began to take control, leading to a dominant second half. Exciting signs for the club, with a number of players already putting their hand up for a senior debut this season.
trent 'blue eyes' theodore cup
We took on Epping in the Trent “Blue Eyes” Theodore Cup. Thanks to Epping for organising a great day to honour Trent. We’re sure he would have loved the attention that comes with having a game named after him. We all miss him dearly.
It was a hard fought contest from the first bounce. We were happy with most aspects of the day, particularly the continued development of our defensive structures. In the end, it was a comfortable six goal win, but there is still plenty to work on heading into round one.
Daniel Spencer was named the inaugural winner of the Trent Theodore Medal, judged best on ground. Spenny continues to impress in his new role as a small pressure forward with his relentless pressure and work rate. Aaron Evans produced another strong performance through the midfield, finding plenty of the footy and finishing with a game high five goals. While Alessio Saitta picked up where he left off, slotting into our back seven and providing strong drive off half back as we explored different options across the ground.
Our Senior Men’s program has one more game before the season begins, taking on North Footscray at home this weekend as part of our 2026 Season Launch.
